Homework Hub
The Homework Hub: Fostering a Joyful Space for Learning
In September 2024, the Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting at Swansea University launched the Homework Hub, a new initiative aimed at providing our undergraduate and postgraduate students with a collaborative and supportive environment for learning.
The idea was first piloted as an assessment clinic for one module. Its popularity with participating students, together with the new challenges of the post-pandemic months have led us to expand it and offer it to the whole ML programme.
“It makes the hard work become easier!”
Education is a journey that often requires collaboration and support; the transition from 6th Form to university can be challenging. Similarly, more is expected from students in their second and final year of studies. All students often find themselves struggling with completing academic assignments in isolation, leading to feelings of frustration and loneliness. Recognizing this challenge, the Homework Hub provides a communal space for students where they can engage with learning and their academic work and share the joy of studying together.
At its core, the Homework Hub is designed to create an environment where students no longer feel isolated in their academic pursuits. By providing a physical space dedicated to studying and learning, the initiative aims to cultivate a sense of camaraderie among students. Whether working on individual projects or collaborating in groups, students can benefit from the vibrant energy that comes from studying in a communal setting.
“Really helpful to have a time dedicated to homework and to be with other people to work. It is very motivating!”
A defining feature of the Homework Hub is the presence of supportive lecturers who are available at all times to offer assistance and guidance to students if needed. Whether clarifying a concept, encouraging reflection, peer support and mentoring, lecturers ensure that students receive the academic support they require even out of class.
In essence, the Homework Hub represents a creative step forward in reimagining the learning experience. By fostering collaboration, camaraderie, and support, it seeks to empower students on their educational journey, ensuring that no student feels alone in their pursuit of knowledge.
“It helps to have a quieter dedicated space to do homework every week. Having a member of staff around is very helpful […] I would love for there to be more than just two hours a week.”
Other departmental initiatives that strengthen a sense of community among our MLTI cohorts and across levels, are the Languages Societies, Lingo Lounge, and The Literacy Project for Spanish Speakers.
