Employability Talks
Knowing that employability is a key concern for all our graduates, these are just some of the events that have taken place for all Translation and Interpreting students recently as part of STING, our Swansea Translation and Interpreting Research Group:
1. Working as a linguist at the European Central Bank
Did you know that the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt has a Language Service with around 90 linguists working in all official languages of the European Union?
We make sure that the ECB’s published communications are clear, understandable and impactful.
The work we do is varied and interesting, and our input is really valued by our colleagues across the bank.
So don’t be put off at the thought of specialising in banking, finance and economics.
Join us online to hear about what it is like to work as a translator or editor in the ECB’s Language Service. Focusing on English editing and multilingual communication, we’ll cover the typical profile of our linguists, our day-to-day tasks, how we learn on the job and the tools of our trade.
We will also give you some information about our traineeships, as well as tips on how to apply and prepare for the selection process.

2. When culture gets in the way of interpreting: An African perspective
A talk by Barbara Hawsley, Registrar and Interpreter at the Youth with a Mission (YWAM), University of the Nations (UofN).
A fascinating talk where we will learn the importance of honouring the culture of the people you communicate with. Barbara will take us through some crucial examples from her workplace and extensive experience as Registrar and interpreter, which highlight how essential good communication is. We will also learn about the do’s and don’ts of interpreting via Zoom, what YWAM is and how different it is to interpret and translate for this organisation from interpreting at the United Nations, for example.
3. Patent translation at WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization.
A talk by Tracey Hay, Head of English Translation at WIPO and Lindi Dotta-Trinsey, a Translator-Reviser.
You might not know what a “patent” is but in this unique talk for Swansea University, we discover not only what a patent is and why this is important in our globalised society but also the world of patent translation, i.e. what it’s like to translate such documents and the skills you need to translate them. After that, attendees will know more about a free patent translation course offered by WIPO to speakers of German.
