‘From and For Wales: New ways of thinking shaping Modern Languages research’

Wednesday 13th September 2023, 09:00 – 17:00, Swansea University’s Singleton Campus

It is a pleasure to invite submissions for the upcoming conference, ‘From and for Wales: New ways of thinking shaping Modern Languages research’, organised by a committee of ECRs and PGRs from Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, and Swansea Universities, and hosted by Swansea University’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Portugal, Spain and the Americas (CEPSAM)’s Welsh Hub, in coordination with the Swansea Translation and Interpreting Group (STING). The conference is generously funded by the Institute of Languages, Cultures, and Societies (ILCS).

A recent article published in The Telegraph has described Wales as “the wokest country in Europe” on account of the inclusive nature of its new school curriculum and its Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan (2022), not to mention the country’s bilingual legislation and the international acclaim that its Well-being of Future Generations Act (2015) has received. Researching in a “woke Wales” offers a unique angle and thematic context. This pan-Wales conference will showcase current research and explore how living and researching in Wales as a distinctive nation offers the potential for different perspectives to arise.

The one-day conference to be held on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus will bring together researchers from across Welsh HE institutions with a view to establishing a network of Wales-based ECRs in Modern Languages and cognate subject areas. Funding has been secured to facilitate travel to Swansea University for accepted papers.

Papers are asked to address how the unique context in Wales may influence or inform the kind of research being carried out by ECRs of Modern Languages (any language), and touch upon any of the following themes:

• Language Teaching and Learning

• Minorities and Marginalisation

• Language Policy and Planning

• Identity Politics

• Arts and Society

• Language in Enterprise

If you would like to contribute a paper, please send an abstract of up to 300 words in the language in which you intend to present (English or Welsh). Emails should be sent to j.r.turner@swansea.ac.uk by no later than Friday 18th August 2023. If you have any queries, do not hesitate to contact the email above.
