German in London: a Cultural and Educational Journey
German language students, both final year and first year, were joined by lecturers Christiane Günther and Susanne Arenhövel, along with employability staff Alexandra Armstrong on a German in London trip funded by the DAAD.
This trip provided an enriching experience exploring German culture and language through various fascinating encounters. Starting off by exploring art and language at the Austrian Cultural Forum, the group went to the Bavarian Office in London, where staff provided an insightful presentation on Bavarian-British relations and explained their roles in fostering these ties. They had the privilege of hearing from an ARD foreign correspondent about the life of a journalist and how to start a career in media. Additionally, the Head of Marketing from the German-British Chamber of Industry and Commerce shared invaluable application tips and discussed common cultural misunderstandings in business relations. Their visit to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in London also opened doors to future academic opportunities as the staff introduced them to various services for German-speaking students, including scholarships and language courses. They left inspired by the possibilities ahead.
Dining at Stein's Berlin offered a delightful taste of German cuisine, followed by an informative session at the Germany´s Cultural Institute, the Goethe-Institut London. They discovered internship opportunities, community projects promoting German language and culture, and explored resources like Onleihe, a German-language digital library. The library quiz helped them dive into the Goethe archives, enhancing their German-speaking skills and career insights.
This trip was an excellent opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in German culture and language while exploring potential career paths. Thank you to everyone who made this journey unforgettable!
