Solidarity with Ukraine
Following Swansea University's partnership with Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University on the Black Sea Coast, the Department of Modern Languages was delighted to host two Ukrainian students in September 2023. The partnership was set up by the University in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on 22 February 2022. In his welcome to the students, Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Boyle said “We are very pleased to welcome you to Swansea. We hope you will play a full part in the life of the University. We hope soon that we can also welcome your lecturers, so that we can build our collaboration in teaching and research.” Since arriving in Swansea, modules taken by the students include German for Beginners, Introduction to Culture and Literary Traditions, and Mythbusters: Beliefs and Truths about Language.
The Department, home to the prestigous Journal of European Studies, has also just published a Ukraine Solidarity Issue, in collaboration with colleagues from History (Stefan Halikowski Smith) and Politics (Robert Bideleux) and PGR students from Creative Writing who assisted with copy editing the submissions written in Kyiv and Lviv. Drs Salwa El-Awa and Kathryn Jones have supported the journal with peer reviews recently, whilst other colleagues are preparing book reviews. Well done to all involved!
